Jisoo of BLACKPINK’s first female-led acting, Snowdrop, received public attention in South Korea long before it aired. There was a petition to cancel the broadcast, and most sponsors withdrew from the project. If you’re a Korean entertainment enthusiast or a K-Drama lover, you might be aware of this drama’s issues. In short, Snowdrop was accused of distorting South Korean history. However, the drama production side denied the accusations and claimed to have edited the scene that caused the debate. Note: I will not talk about the controversy in this post. First, let’s watch the trailer below.

SYNOPSIS: Snowdrop, written by Yoo Hyun-Mi, is set in 1987 where a dictatorial government rules South Korea. Lim Soo-Ho (27), played by Jung Hae-In, is covered in blood as he hides in the female dormitory at Hosu Women’s University. At the same time, the Korean Agency for National Security Planning (ANSP), famous for arresting student protesters, breaks into the student dormitory to catch a suspected North Korean spy. Eun Young-Ro (20), played by Kim Ji-Soo, finds Lim Soo-Ho collapsed in her room. Feeling familiar from having met on a blind date, she helps to hide him. However, Lim Soo-Ho, whose identity is known as a graduate student, is revealed as not who he appears to be. The story of the two develops against a backdrop of gripping political upheaval and power struggles.

REVIEW:

4.5/5 ☆ I still cannot move on to Lim Soo-Ho. A perfect K-Drama if you need a good cry.

First of all, I would like to mention and appreciate the backsound of the intro. It’s an OST entitled Friend by Kim Heewon. I LOVE IT. The only K-Drama intro that I don’t dare to skip. Do we need to talk about the acting of the casts, tho? No words are needed. This drama is full of senior and amazing actors. Besides Jung Hae-In and Kim Ji-soo, the main casts are Yoo In-Na, Yoon Se-ah, Kim Hye-yoon, Jang Seung-Jo, Jung Yoo-Jin. Not to mention the supporting roles who are also experienced actors and actresses. No wonder people called Snowdrop as one of the expensive K-Drama in 2021. As for Jisoo’s debut acting. Is this really her first female-led project? Are you sure? Her acting is on par with other actors and actresses. I had low expectations because debut acting will be ‘noticeable’ especially compared to seniors on the same project. But, guess what? I’m so proud of Jisoo’s acting. Her chemistry with Jung Hae-In is lovely. Let’s talk about the set and tone. At the beginning of the episode, the sets vary with bright and lovely tones. As the story goes on, the setting of this drama is mostly centered in one place: the student dormitory. This drama is claimed as a romance genre. The question is, really? Are you sure this is a romance drama? Phew, we got only a few romance scenes. I witnessed how the global audience was hyping a hashtag on Twitter, waiting for a kiss scene LMAO. We got more sad and heartbreaking scenes with a tense atmosphere. As you know, there are many casts in this drama, so you need to focus when you watch. Moreover, there is political plot contained in the drama. You cannot skip a second, bestie! Otherwise, you’ll confuse yourself :D

Anyway, do you know what is Snowdrop? Is that winter snowflakes falling from the sky? Uhm… Bestie, try to guess a lil bit more :D

Snowdrop or Galanthus is a flower that belongs to the Amaryllidaceae family. This flower symbolizes deep meanings such as innocence, purity, hope, rebirth, and sympathy. The white color of the flower symbolizes innocence and purity. Hope is represented by this flower’s blooming time, which blooms in late winter and early spring. Snowdrop, a flower that grows in early spring, is seen as a symbol of rebirth and the ability to overcome challenges in life. This flower is also considered a symbol of sympathy and caring. Okay, now you know what snowdrop is. B — But, bestie… What does this have to do with the drama?

Besides all the excellent symbolism I mentioned above, there is also the unpleasant symbolism of this flower. Little did we know that this flower also symbolized death and bad luck according to the Victorian era because the flowers grew in cemeteries. Can you see the blurred snowdrop flower in the poster above? The flower is pointing to Eun Young-Ro, so…? I will leave the rest of the assumptions to you.

I will not talk more to avoid a spoiler. C’mon, bestie, you should watch it yourself! You can watch this drama legally on Disney+ (Note: This is not sponsored post, but I’m always available for an offer hihi :D) I will end my short review here. I want to thank Jung Hae-In’s acting, I woke up with a swollen eyes watching the final episode. I give 4.5/5 ☆ to this drama because Lim Soo-ho’s quote comforts me when I really need it at the moment.

“You must live no matter how hard it gets.” — Lim Sooho.
